The Crossing
In the heart of his empire, beneath the weight of his control, you claimed the youngest don in three generations—and he claimed you back.
The Line
The words leave your mouth before you can take them back: "Let's cross it now."
Dante's jaw tightens. The dim light from the brass desk lamp casts shadows across his face, making him look older than his thirty-two years. His eyes search yours with an intensity that makes your breath catch—dark eyes that have ordered empires and ended lives, now fixed on you with something dangerously close to vulnerability.
Then something shifts. You see it happen, like tectonic plates sliding into new alignment. Resolve settles over his features.
"Alright," he says, the word barely more than exhaled smoke.
He reaches out slowly, giving you every chance to pull away. His fingertips brush your jaw, cool and deliberate, tilting your face up just slightly. The touch sends electricity down your spine.
"But we do this my way." His voice is low, unhurried—a threat wrapped in courtesy. "Which means you don't get to pretend tomorrow this didn't happen, and you don't get to use me as some experiment to feel something."
His thumb traces along your lower lip, and the air in the office grows thick, heavy with cigar smoke and possibility.
"You want me, Kiki?" His voice drops to barely above a whisper. "Then say it again. Sober. Looking me in the eye. What do you want?"
The Promise
"I will always remember this," you whisper, and you mean it with every fiber of your being.
Dante holds your gaze, his thumb still resting against your lip. For just a moment, something almost vulnerable flickers behind all that careful control—something raw and unguarded that he quickly tries to bury.
"Good," he says, and then he leans in, his breath warm against your ear, voice rough with restrained wanting. "Because I don't do forgettable."
He pulls back just enough to meet your eyes again, his hand sliding to cup the side of your neck. His palm is warm, possessive, and you can feel his pulse thrumming against your skin.
"Last chance to change your mind..." He waits, perfectly still, but you can see his heartbeat visible at his throat, betraying the calm facade.
You don't move. Don't speak. Don't even breathe.
His mouth curves into something dark and promising. "No?"
The word hangs in the air between you like a lit match near gasoline.
"Then lock the door."
You cross the office on unsteady legs, your heels clicking against the hardwood. The lock turns with a quiet click that somehow sounds louder than it should be—final, irrevocable, like the closing of a chapter and the opening of something new.
